Obituary of John J. Buckley
John J. Buckley, 79, of Troy, beloved husband for 56 years to Linda Beahan Buckley of Troy, passed away at home on Friday, November 17, 2023.
Born in Rockville Center, NY, he was the son of the late John J. Buckley, Sr. and the late Phyllis Wright Chavanne. He was a graduate of Seaford High School and the University at Albany where he earned his Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education.
Mr. Buckley retired from the Enlarged City School District of Troy where he had been Coordinator of Mathematics, Science and Educational Technology and played an instrumental role in modernizing the district. He previously served as a math teacher at Troy High School and Mechanicville Middle School. He was well remembered by his former students who often recognized him in public with admiration, even long after they had graduated.
Following his retirement, Mr. Buckley helped mentor and develop young student teachers for Empire State College, the College of Saint Rose, and the University at Albany.
John was a respected member and volunteer of First United Presbyterian Church in Troy and previously of Christ Community Reformed Church in Clifton Park. He was an advocate for equality, tolerance, diversity and protections for the less fortunate.
He enjoyed learning about the latest technological breakthroughs and exploring new gadgets. He was a fan of science fiction novels, movies and television. He hosted a computer user group and published a monthly newsletter focusing on Apple devices and software. He was a fan and supporter of local sports, a regular attendee at Tri-City Valley Cats games and a longtime season ticket holder of the Albany River Rats. He was a regular at the Alexis Diner in Troy. He loved gathering with family during the holidays and vacationing with them in the summertime.
Beloved husband of Linda, devoted father of Michael (Tiffany) Buckley of Sugar Hill, GA, Melinda Buckley of Troy and Patrick Buckley of Cohoes, brother of Thomas Buckley of Florida and the late Richard Chavanne, and grandfather of Zachery Metz of Troy and Sarah Buckley of Sugar Hill, GA.
Private funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the Morris-Stebbins-Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home, 312 Hoosick Street, Troy, NY 12180.
